No rest for GSP and his bunged crotch

Personally, I was kinda glad to hear that Georges St Pierre ripped up his groin at UFC 100. No, it wasn’t because of some Bisping-style animosity. I just figured now Georges would have an excuse to take a freaking rest and stop training for longer than a few weeks. But now it looks like his injury isn’t quite as severe as originally thought:

Despite initial in-cage reports by Georges St-Pierre (19-2 MMA, 13-2 UFC) himself that he had torn a muscle in his groin – an injury that could have shelved the UFC’s welterweight champion for a significant period – more official evaluations of the injury suffered earlier this month at UFC 100 have revealed a less severe conclusion.

According to a statement issued late Saturday night by St-Pierre’s manager, Shari Spencer, no surgery will be required to repair the injury.

“Evaluation of the results of an MRI indicate that no surgery will be required, and Georges should be back in the gym training within a few weeks after a brief rehabilitation,” Spencer stated.

While GSP doesn’t seem to be planning on any downtime training-wise, the NSAC has still barred him from competing until January 8th or until a doctor clears him. If that’s not for a while, I think Kampmann / Swick should TOTALLY be for the interim welterweight belt. Or would that just further highlight how retarded it is for a fight between #7 and #8 ranked guys to be for #1 contendership?
