There’s been a rumor floating around for the past few days that Joe Stevenson and Mac Danzig would face off down the road in a “loser leaves town” match. Now it looks like the UFC has chickened out of that fight:
UFC lightweights Joe Stevenson (29-10 MMA, 6-4 UFC) and Mac Danzig (18-6-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC), linked together for a possible showdown in a recent report from longtime MMA commentator Mauro Ranallo, are no longer slated to meet.
Stevenson today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that there has been a change of plans, though he could not elaborate on a new opponent.
“It was talked about, but it’s not happening,” Stevenson said.
This doesn’t surprise me … setting up a match where you’re guaranteeing a TUF winner gets fired just doesn’t seem like a very smart business decision to me. The UFC needs to keep it’s TUF champs around as proof that the reality show model works. Sure, they got rid of Travis Lutter. But he ended up looking like a lazy piece of shit and Dana had to sacrifice him to the mob. Joe and Mac (hah!) have been nothing but loyal company men, so expect relatively soft rebounds for both of them.
