Bellator’s middleweight tournament survives Friday’s face-off brawl between Andreas Spang and Maquiel Falcao:
Ohio Athletic Commission Executive Director Bernie Profato today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Spang has been fined 20 percent of his $30,000 fight purse ($6,000) for instigating a post-fight scuffle at Bellator 66 with .
Spang also shoved opponent Brian Rogers at Bellator 66′s weigh-ins.
Jeez, Sir Shoves-A-Lot. Mummy not give you enough hugs as a child? Do you pinch and bite too?
Profato said he initially planned to suspend Spang six months because of the shoves. However, after an unofficial appeal from Bellator officials and Spang, who would have been forced to scratch from the tournament finale, Profato gave the fighter the option to choose a 20 percent fine or the suspension.
I didn’t know commissions could play out Let’s Make a Deal with fighters and promotions. Good thing for Bellator, the last thing they need is more tournaments falling apart. Well, maybe one or two more so they consider taking their tournament-or-die approach down a notch. Shockingly, Maquiel Falcao’s muay thai response to the shove was declared self-defense and he walks away from the scrum without any commission punishment. I bet Nick Diaz wished the Nashville brawl happened in Ohio…
“WHAT’S YOUR MAJOR MALFUNCTION NUMBNUTTS?!!!”
Should have fined Falcao as well. Imagine if both had been suspended?
