Hey, did you hear that Affliction and Golden Boy broke up? I know! Golden Boy said that Affliction was being too controlling. What a jerk! Yeah! But now Affliction just went and got a NEW girlfriend. Already? Yeah I know. What an ass. Affliction’s going out with HDNet. But get this … Randy Couture’s also saying ‘we’ when talking about Affliction, like they’re going out too. Doesn’t he know how jealous UFC gets when he talks like that?
Yep, the whole Affliction/Golden Boy/HDNet/Randy Couture/UFC thing is starting to sound like a really juicy high school love triangle (or hexagon in this case). We’ve already mentioned that Affliction and Golden Boy are splitsville, but it looks like Affliction has moved right along to Mark Cuban and his HDNet gang. Randy Couture is on the Affliction bandwagon … they’ve always been tight since Affliction is responsible for Randy’s XTreme Couture shirts (so heinous they’re banned as wangster wear in many clubs). But when Randy starts saying ‘our’ and ‘we’ in terms of promoting events, you should take note:
“Xtreme Couture is partnered with Affliction and they did it to hurt me,” Couture said. “We are now the Banned Brand of the UFC. Things have still been OK. We’ve spent more than $1 million sponsoring fighters. It motivated (Affliction owner Todd Beard). to put on our own shows.”
Affliction was initially rumored to be partnering with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy productions, but a source close to the fighter’s contracts said the partnership has dissolved.
HDNet owner Mark “Cuban is helping out,” Couture said. “More than likely, I will end up signing with HDNet and Affliction. Realistically, that is the best option.”
I’m also interesting in knowing what came first chicken/egg style: did the UFC ban Affliction for wanting to start a promotion or did Affliction want to start it’s own promotion because the UFC banned it? We initially thought that Affliction got thrown to the curb over the whole Randy/Fedor commercial, but the UFC justified it all saying Affliction was becoming a competing promotion. I’d say it’s kinda an important clarification as to who did what first, but what do I know … I’m just a blogger.
