Okay, so it was a scary moment when I opened up Evan Tanner’s new Spike blog and the title of his latest post was “I’m done, I’m retiring”. Fortunately, that’s a bit of a misleading statement. As usual the whole post is worth reading to get the full Tanner experience, but check out the key bit here:
Losing sucks. It’s been pretty tough the last couple of days. I’ve been keeping to myself. I haven’t felt like talking with anyone. I haven’t seen anything about the fight. I know I looked really bad. I don’t need to see it, or hear about it to know that. I’ve been having some serious health problems for a while now. They’ve caused me some problems in my daily life and have seriously affected my training. I obviously haven’t been the same guy in the ring.
I’m going to be taking a little time off to see a doctor. If we can’t get this health issue figured out, I’m done, I’m retiring. I don’t want to step back into the Octagon unless I’m 100%, and I can give the fans the type of fight they deserve to see.
I don’t see it coming to that though. Tomorrow I’m hopping on the bike, and riding up to Oregon to visit the good doctor. I’ve got a good feeling about things.
Personally, I think he did pretty well considering he spent the last two years of his life drinking himself half dead. But when you think about it, it’s kinda egotistical to think you can do that and then walk back into the UFC and succeed against the #1 middleweight contender or a TUF winner. We were all kinda flying on the feel good vibes Evan put out when he set his date to stop drinking and start training again. But unfortunately, this ain’t the movies and reality has a habit of bitch slapping dreams square in the face. Now that we’ve all been reminded of that, perhaps it’s time for the UFC to give Evan a softer fight in the form of a TUF washout? Please???
