Silly me. Here I was being worried that Roxy leaving Strikeforce would mean she’d be getting less fights. Instead, she’s about to embark on another busy patch: She’ll be fighting Hitoma Akano on Sengoku’s New Years Eve card, and now she has another fight confirmed for February against Rosi Sexton:
Top UK promotion Cage Warriors Fighting Championship has finalised what is arguably the biggest women’s fight in its eight-year history. Cage Warriors champ Rosi “The Surgeon” Sexton will face Roxanne “The Happy Warrior” Modafferi in a 125-pound bout at CWFC 40 on February 26, 2011.
MMARising.com first learned of the fight in early December and has since confirmed the matchup with multiple sources close to the negotiations. Both fighters have signed bout agreements. The fight will serve as Modafferi’s debut at 125 pounds, but will not be contested for Sexton’s CWFC title.
Consider this another sign that women’s MMA is fleshing out: everyone is dropping weight classes. Who knows how heavy Cris Cyborg is, but catch her during her period and she can’t even cut below 150 pounds. The ladies at the top of the 135 division are getting bigger and bigger, so we’re starting to see the 125 pound division flourish when it was once comprised of a stubborn Tara LaRosa and some tumbleweeds. While it was fun watching Roxy compete against larger competition (did I ever tell you about the time Roxy nearly fought Cyborg in Montreal?), I’m excited to see how much more ass she can kick when her opponents don’t have a crazy size advantage. WAR ROXY!
