Lots of big fights getting pseudo-confirmed today … Fedor vs Barnett from Affliction, and now Shogun / Machida by MMA Weekly:
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has in principle accepted a bout with new light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, MMAWeekly.com has learned from sources close to negotiations.
Though a concrete date for the fight could not be confirmed, and Machida’s management could not be reached at the time of this writing, sources say it would likely take place in October or November.
By being the only half decent light heavyweight without a fight booked, Shogun has basically landed himself a title shot by default, something which seems to be happening quite a bit with the UFC lately. As Shawn said: at least Rua comes with a resume that justifies the shot to a degree. Although you do have to engage in some serious 1984 doublethink to ignore that terrible loss to Forrest Griffin and even worse win against Mark Coleman.
