I dunno what it is about the prairies, but it seems they’re fucked when it comes to UFC events. As bad as the past two years were due to the Gypsy Curse, there was no worse show than UFC 149 aka The Calgary Show. And now it’s happening again, this time to UFC 161 in Winnipeg. Starting off with an interim title shot, losing that fight and devolving from there, Winnipeg isn’t even getting the Shogun Rua vs Chael Sonnen fight that is replacing Shogun vs Lil Nog.
After a day of rumors that Chael Sonnen would be stepping in to face Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 161 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, the UFC announced late Monday night that Rua has been pulled from the June 15th show.
The UFC tweet said Rua was left without an opponent, because of the injury to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. The event will proceed with 11 fights, and Rua (21-7) will fight on a show soon.
According to sources close to the negotiations, they are now working on a Rua vs. Sonnen for the debut show on Fox Sports 1, on Aug. 17 at the T.D. Gardens in Boston.
So Winnipeg’s loss is Boston’s gain. And this after Dana White promised to make it up to Canadian fans after the Calgary debacle! But El Baldo Presidente had other promises to keep, like the promise that UFC on Fox Sports 1 1 (when will someone come up with a better name?!) would be the best card they’ve ever put on free television. That’s already fated to be a hyperbolic statement but at least he can keep it from becoming a farcical one. Rua vs Sonnen is a pretty sweet fight, especially with the backstory of Sonnen coming in and saving the day. Just not for Winnipeg folks anymore.
