Thank God for GSP’s giant testicles

Dave Meltzer breaks down the thought process the UFC went through when seeking a replacement for Matt Serra:

St. Pierre and his management team called UFC after getting news of Serra’s injury, and asked for the match. At that point, UFC officials were looking at presenting either Josh Koscheck or Thiago Alves, with the latter having the better shot since he was coming off four straight wins. Jon Fitch, who may have been the first offered the fight, turned it down, because he had gained significant weight and felt he couldn’t make weight in a healthy fashion on short notice. His camp, San Jose’s American Kickboxing Academy, suggested Koscheck, who is closer to the 170-pound weight limit, would have made an interesting opponent for Hughes. The only negative was Koscheck was coming off a loss to St. Pierre on Aug. 26.

St. Pierre was thought off limits. He already had a guaranteed title shot in April, with his home city of Montreal close to locked up as the location. But with seven months between fights, St. Pierre was getting antsy for competition. He had even talked of competing in amateur wrestling at the Canadian national level. St. Pierre, with no competitive wrestling background, outwrestled Koscheck in his win.

So basically if it wasn’t for GSP stepping up and saying “I want this fight”, we could have ended up with a gigantic turd of a main event. So again, I just want to say “Thank you Georges for having the balls to do this!”

I hope GSP whips the shit out of that corn feed jesus freak.

  • Tommy

God I hope GSP will be in full fighting shape. If so he will dominate Hughes once again.

I hope GSP wins, then gets injured so Serra has to fight Matt Hughes and Serra wins and then fights GSP when he’s better and then GSP takes back the title. That way everyone will know how shitty Hughes is and how great GSP is without a doubt.

oh god. let the canadian love fest begin

Hey Fightlinker! Long-time reader, first time post.

Is there anywhere we can go to get reaction from the Hughes Camp on Serra’s replacement. It seems to me that this may be a set-back as he has made it clear he only has 2-3 fights left. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t stand the “Jesus Freak” and would be more than happy to watch GSP’s Spinning Back Kick put to the side of Hughes’ nose. I also understand that a victory over Serra would have set this match up anyway. Perhaps I’m just bitter to see the bad-blood between Serra and Hughes go to waste. But for a guy contemplating retirement, much less a 9-time champ, does the risk outweigh the reward?

    Thanks and Bon Chance GSP!

BTW, The 1st sentence was meant to be posed as a question. Apologies for the grammar & punctuation.

Merci mon Dieu pour les énormes couilles de GSP….

I saw a few interviews claiming Hughes camp ASKED for the fight, not the other way around.

It kinda goes to show that titles almost play no role in this sport, since I would much prefer to see GSP vs. Hughes than Serra vs. anybody.

The quality of opponents and record should be enough for fans to decide the ranking no matter who holds a “title.”

The should simply have a yearly tournament structure to determine a final qualified/lucky winner for the year and get rid of the defending a weightclass.

Yeah, here’s on Matt’s blog where he said he asked for the fight too:

To me, it’s pretty smart because it means he’s fighting a possibly out of shape / unprepared GSP … adds some real question marks to the equation.

    Thanks guys.

I dont see this fight going any different then their 2nd fight. I just hope Serra doesnt retire before being exposed as very very very lucky.

When GSP jogs during training, he annoys the entire neighborhood with the sound of his iron balls clanking together.

Anyone have any info about this “very specific” ninja move GSP has talked about using against Hughes that will “shock” people?
