The Incredible Expanding UFC 129 Post

Look at that smug motherfucker. (via the UFC Facebook page)

The press conference has started and here’s the awards:

FOTN: Jose Aldo vs Mark Hominick
KOTN: Lyoto Machida
SOTN: Pablo Garza
Bonuses: $129,000

Attendence: 55,724
Gate: $11,500,000 Canadian ($12,075,000 US)

Iron Forges Iron already has a bunch of gifs up.

Machida on how much Steven Seagal had to do with that front kick: “He always reinforced that to me, ‘Try that kick, it will land and when it lands it will work.’ So I give credit to him for helping me perfect that kick.”

Jake Shields on GSP’s eye: “I didn’t know he couldn’t see out of it.”

Those big overhand rights that worked oh so well. (via the Toronto Star)

More after the jump.

Via Cage Writer, Hominick’s forehead looking like it’s about ready to give birth as well. Props to Mark for doing better than anyone expected him to. Gutting it out through to the fifth and then taking over the last round was a little victory all in it’s own.

According to, tonight marked the end of Georges St Pierre’s 30 straight round winning streak. I still don’t really know which rounds he lost to Jake Shields, but there you go.

Yeah, rub that fucking thing. Rub it good.

Via Head Kick Legend:

John Makdessi on his spinning backfisk KO:

“I knew I hit him well, but I didn’t know I knocked him out. I guess when you train that much, it’s just a feeling to know when to use it.I like to feel out my opponent first. It’s a true testament to my great coaches and my kickboxing coach.”

On Dana tweeting that he’s going to win Knockout of the Night:

“This is going to change my life.”

Oooooor not. I bet all the guys who would have won KOTN on any other night than this still got a nice chunk of cash from the Dana though.

Esther Lin’s photographer spot was slightly … obstructed. The caption for this photo: “I’m going to try my darndest.”

Or neither? Seriously, I’m getting sick of this teasing shit.

Fightmetric has it’s stats for Aldo / Hominick and GSP / Shields up. Looks like Shields won that last round legit, but I still have no idea how anyone could give him round 4 after that head kick.

Ariel Helwani’s got videos up with a bunch of fighters. So does the UFC.

With that KO, Stephen Seagal is bi-winning.  But how… and why?!?!

  • fishead

GSP + Randy skipping the press conference because they’re at the hospital.

  • Reverend Clint

  • scissors61

mother of dog, a fucking crane kick finish.

  • GoldenArms

have you ever seen GSP throw so many overhand rights? jesus those were terrible. was he training with KOS? when was the last time you saw GSP throw a hook? and whoever is Jake Shields striking coach is retarded. who taught him to kick like an amateur? Jake could kick a four-year old in the face and it would do no damage. “OK Jake, I want you to lead with a weak ass kick and look like my girlfriend doing so”.

Rogan called UFC 129 “the biggest event in MMA history”. What kind of metric is he using to reach that conclusion?

Credit to Garza for going for the flying triangle – too bad he had to fiddle with it for half a minute afterwards to fully sink it in, and downright fuckings to him for trying to pull the refs leg by lying to him.

The Machida kick was awesome, but the fact that the receiver was a pathetic old man kinda makes me feel guilty about being too impressed.

I fast-forwarded through the whole GSP fight and still thought it was boring.

  • Mr Sacky

    “Look at that smug motherfucker.”

You talking about Seagal or Anderson?

  • Jim Harbaugh Scramble

the GSP/Shields fight was horrible (duh)
But I place more blame on shields for that. WTF was his gameplan? He literally did nothing to try to win the fight when it was obvious he needed a finish.

  • kvelertak

I wanna see diaz clean up this GSP shit.

  • Reverend Clint

as i figured the gsp/shields was a snoozefest with 2 guys who cant really strike putting on a kickboxing bout. Again GSP has no trigger to pull after he was smashed by Serra and now that he trains with Jackson Win at All Cost Systems.

the rest of the card was pretty sweet. I missed the prelims they didnt show on the PPV because of work. Aldo vs Homonick was pretty good especially after Homo started to look like Jason Voorhees.

  • kvelertak

GSP isn’t a striker and he’s never going to be.

Please stop making an ass of yourself frenchie.

  • Zurich

The overhand rights were retarded.  What is this, a Chuck Liddell 2003 tribute fight?  He should have gone back to the crisp hooks and straights that dropped Fitch like 3 times in one round.

  • bosswell

GoldenArms: I agree with your thoughts on Jake’s kicks 100%

P W: he was saying its the biggest event because they sold a record number of seats.

  • Reverend Clint

yeah fake events like Dynamite USA dont count since it actually sold like 50 tickets

  • Redping

how the fuck could one of the judges given aldo the fight 50-43? how does that make any sense at all?

  • shillyer

you remember couture practice stepping just out side the front kick and comming in stong with his hands in the warm up? I think he was trying to do that when he got KTFO

  • P W

bosswell, Clint: But it’s NOT EVEN CLOSE to being the biggest MMA event in history based on the number of spectators! Is it another cases of American hubris, when words like “the world” and “history” only encompasses the North American continent?

  • Reverend Clint

north america is what counts… plus asians are only half people anways

  • P W

…and fatass North Americans count as two.

  • frickshun

Redping–>of all the subjective judging defenses I’ve ever heard, that score alone should get the guy perma-banned. I don’t think there’s an athletic commission anywhere that could justify giving the last round to Aldo. And it was easily 10-8. Maybe the dude just had his score in the wrong column or it was added up wrong @ the end. Seems fucking impossible to mess that up….

  • DJ ThunderElbows

I heard that was tallied wrong initially – this is what Wikipedia currently has.

Aldo defeated Hominick via unanimous decision (48-45, 48-46, 49-46) to retain the UFC Featherweight Championship.

The idea I heard was they initially added the 10-8 for Aldo which brought us the 50 by mistake.
