Bad news for the potential future of Strikeforce as a league: last weekend’s Heavyweight Grand Prix semi-finals were a total flop.
After the first two Grand Prix events landed in the top two all time Strikeforce ratings slots (741k viewers for Fedor vs. Silva and 624k viewers for Overeem vs. Werdum), Saturday’s show pulled in just 274,000 viewers. This made the event the second worst major Strikeforce event performance since the Showtime deal.
The only event that did worse ratings wise was the G3 show in the middle of the week. Attendance for this part of the grand prix was also balls. While official numbers have not been released yet, guesstimates from the people there put the numbers at around 1500 or less. While you can blame the terrible outcome on the card without any major draws, you could also make the argument that the UFC kinda sorta forgot to promote the event, what with the mega Fox news and Nick Diaz shenanigans sucking up all the oxygen last week.
