While getting grilled about his TRT use at a UFC on FX 8 press conference, Vitor Belfort offered up a rather interesting quote:
“The UFC always knew that I use, do not do it to cheat. I have medical monitoring and UFC also accompanies it. Never broken through anything, always acted cleanly. Do blood tests every week to equal the testosterone levels of a person my age. Many people are averse to treatment. I am not. I am in favor of people being open and fair in what they are doing.”
Always known? That sounds like something you’d say when you’re discussing a long-standing habit, ‘I’ve always masturbated with this mask on,’ that sort of thing. If we, the public, only found out about his testosterone use in February, how long has the UFC known? Surely he didn’t just begin his treatment in the lead-up the Bisping fight. You’d think if he’d been getting weekly tests and operating in an ‘open and fair’ manner for a long time this news would have popped up sooner. Also he probably wouldn’t have given a super-incriminating sketchy interview like this in January.
Perhaps the biggest hole in his story is that in the wake of Vitor’s TRT revelation, his boss Dana White, promised to rain hellfire on TRT users saying:
“What I believe guys are doing, is jacking up this stuff through roof through their entire training camp, then getting back down to normal levels right before the fight, which is cheating. I hate it, I don’t like it and I’m going to fight it. And if you are using TRT in the UFC, we’re going to start testing the shit out of you for the entire camp.”
Those don’t sound like the words of a man who ‘always knew’ that any fighter on TRT was getting weekly blood tests and being medically monitored by his staff.
