Listening to Tito talk about who he’s gonna sign with is like watching someone potentially bluffing their way through a poker game. You just never know if the shit they’re saying is the truth or just a ploy.
During Saturday’s EliteXC Heat show, Tito started off an interview somewhat coy and then basically said “Yep, looks like I’m signing with EliteXC.” Of course, we’ve heard this song and dance before with Tito and Affliction, and we all know how that turned out. So just by process of elimination, there’s a good chance Tito will end up with EliteXC. Here’s some key quotes from an interview with MMA Junkie:
“Affliction kind of dampered away just because they just want to pay for a fighter just to fight,” Ortiz said. “I’m not that fighter to make a company as the UFC is now and just get paid just for the fights.”
“I think it’s just a percentage of all the way around what my name is going to be in — merchandising, pay-per-view, gate, everything,” Ortiz said. “I want a piece of it just because I’m putting the butts in the seats (and getting) the pay-per-view buys.
“With EliteXC and CBS and Showtime backing me on this, it’s a possibility that we might get something finished before the month’s over,” Ortiz said. “And the UFC actually has the option to match [any offer]. If they match it, fighters are going to be even more happy because I’ll do it with the UFC. But if I don’t do it with the UFC, I’ll do it with EliteXC and CBS.”
Also worth keeping in mind: whatever happens contract wise in the next few days, weeks, or months, don’t expect to see Tito back in the cage for several months. He’s about to have a spinal fusion surgery, so anyone who manages to land his services better hope they’re still around by the time he’s back to use him.
