MMA Junkie got in touch with Affliction promoter and certified genius Tom Atencio to ask why the fuck he’d think counter-programming UFC 100 is a good idea. Here’s what he said:
“I think it could work,” Atencio said. “I really do.
“But at the same time there, obviously there’s a lot of – no matter what I do, I’m going to be criticized for it. I guess it really doesn’t matter either way if I do it or I don’t do it.”
This is quite an amusing theory … no matter what Tom Atencio does, people will criticize him, so he might as well do the dumbest things possible. Has it ever occurred to him that if he made choices that weren’t insane (choices like paying fighters a reasonable sum and not guaranteeing AIG-level bonuses for fighting Fedor), then perhaps people wouldn’t be bagging on him so much?
There’s all sorts of other goodies in the article, such as the fact that July 11th is still just an idea and not firm, that Atencio sees Fedor vs Barnett as the best option for a headlining fight, and that he’s still taking things ‘one event at a time.’ The line that stuck out at me the most was the following though: “But nonetheless, just keep talking about us.”
Is all this crazy talk just a big setup to waste everyone’s time talking about their stupid company?
