For a country our size, Canada does pretty well in MMA. We have enough fans that the UFC loves coming to Montreal and Toronto, and even bothers with some of the middle provinces. We’ve got one of the top five P4P fighters in the world in Georges St Pierre, and a number of other decent name guys. Sure, none of them are very high up the rankings other than Rory MacDonald. But give us a break. We have a population of 33 million. To put that in perspective, the state of California alone has 38 million.
Still, when you look at our performance as an MMA nation, there’s room for improvement. We can’t touch America, Brazil, or even Russia and we’re stuck battling it out amongst the UK, Japan, and even Australia. Yes, EVEN Australia! And just to make that point as official as it’s gonna get…
As first reported on FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight,” TUF: Canada vs. Australia will take place in the near future, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The UFC has yet to confirm the show, but they are expected to do so in the coming weeks.
Tryouts for the reality show are also expected to take place in the coming months. It’s still unclear which weight classes will be featured, who the coaches will be, and where the show will be filmed and air. Those details will be revealed soon.
Oh please God let them fly all the Australians over in the dead of winter. That would pretty much lock the win up for Canadians immediately. Guys go coo coo enough as it is on TUF, imagine a heavy dose of seasonal affectation disorder on top of that? Between severe depression and no Vegemite resulting in a total lack of essential B vitamins, those Aussies would be screwed. And Canada can proudly take second to last place in the national MMA rankings.
