UFC 139 gets better, uglier

UFC 139 appears to have gotten a major boost after having had its original main event, Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos, surgically removed and grafted on to the UFC’s FOX debut: mmaweekly.com is reporting that the brand-spankin’-new main event for the San Jose card will feature Shogun Rua vs.  “Dangerous” “Decision” Dan “Hollywood” Henderson. This ought to satiate the large group of fans who (correctly) protested the Vitor Belfort/Cung Le fight that was added to the card as a blatant mismatch aimed at drawing in local dupes and fans of B-grade martial arts movies, seeing as it’s a good matchup that’s been much-discussed since the ancient salad days of PRIDE. Maybe they can bring back Takada in all his diapered glory for one last bang of the taiko drum before these guys scrap it out in Cali.

Both Henderson and Rua are coming off KO victories over fighters that have…*ahem*…seen better days in Forrest Griffin and Fedor Emelianenko, though Hendo has had a better run over the course of his last few fights. Then again, he’s been fighting guys like Rafael Feijao and not freak-limbed human buzzsaws like Jon Jones. For my part I’m taking Shogun in this fight due to Hendo’s age and tendency to engage in questionable slugfests with sharp strikers, but you never know. Who you got, Jackals?

    hot damn!!

some one is going to sleep and it’s not going to take a rufi to get the job done.

  • glassjawsh

either shogun by decision or hendo by ko

though i tend to like hendo more, i dont really care who wins as long as it’s a good scrap

  • Redping

we still have no idea whether shogun is in shape, all we know is he’s still got knockout power in his hammerfists, but somehow i dout that’s going to come up against hendo. I’m a diehard shogun fan though so i’ll be rootin for a finish from him, even against dan who I like as well

  • frickshun

Rua’s last fight was so quick. Why does everyone think it’s so telling??
Good match-up between a couple of guys soon to be passed by in the sport.
I got Shogun just cuz he fights with half a brain & more than 1 haymaker punch.

another fight that made sense 6 years ago

  • kvelertak

Rua will out game plan him, and bring the brutality when Hendo runs out of roid juice.

So this makes three Strikeforce belts that are now… vacant?  Up for auction?

  • scissors61

I guess at this point they’re techincally vacant. Seems like the logical matchup for the Strikeforce 205 belt would be King Mo vs. Feijao II, but who knows what’ll happen with those belts. Gil Melendez must be feeling left out at this point.

Neat fight.  Dan’s got the pharmacistathleticism edge, But Shogun’s a bit more cunning.

  • kvelertak

Strikeforce doesnt exist. It’s been sold and is being liquidized like any other asset. I

  • CAP

Yeah I don’t really care who wins I like both but would like to see Hendo keep rolling. Should be a very good fight. Gtfo with the Belfort/Le as the main event, this is much better.

  • G Funk

Awesome. I can’t believe this match-up never happened in Japan.

  • Billytk

Unless Dan decides to man up and challenge the WW that owned him in their first fight I have no interest in seeing him circle around the ring hoping to land a big right hand against whoever he fights, that loss took away ANY credibility he had as a top contender

  • glassjawsh

^ yeah! And gsp is a fraud because of that one time he lost to matt Serra! forget every win in his entire impressive career because of one bad loss!!

    also, you’re a dumbass
