UFC sues it’s first stream site

When Dana White first mentioned that the UFC was going after pirates, he implied that it wasn’t just the distributors of his content who would get the legal shafting, but users as well. Since I estimate about 70% of the fanbase has ‘stolen’ UFC content at one point or another (and that number goes up to 99.9999% if you include youtube videos), I thought that was a bit of a dickish inclusion. There’s another organization called the Recording Industry of America which decided suing fans was the way to go. The result? They were voted the Most Hated Company in America, beating those rape-facilitating, war profiteering douchebags at Halliburton.

But so far the UFC has kept things relatively small scale, only suing some bar in Boston for playing UFC 104 off a laptop and now suing some fly by night pay to stream site.

Las Vegas-based Zuffa LLC, owner of the UFC, filed suit in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas on Thursday against Moazzam Gandu. Zuffa says Gandu lives in Stafford, Va., and runs the Web site

Zuffa complained that rage-streams is offering unauthorized “live streaming” video of UFC 110 for $6.99, even though the lowest authorized price for the broadcast of the event is $44.95.

UFC 110 is a series of bouts set for Sydney, Australia, on Saturday (Sunday in Australia).

Rage-streams also offers for sale unauthorized video of at least 40 past UFC events, Zuffa charges. Rage-Streams is profiting from these current and past broadcasts by selling advertising with them, attorneys for Zuffa said.

The lawsuit asserts allegations including copyright and trademark infringement, unfair competition and deceptive trade practices. It seeks a temporary restraining order barring rage-streams from providing unauthorized UFC broadcasts.

According to the actual court filing, Zuffa is asking for up to 150k per infringement, adding up to around 6 million bucks. Or if the judge finds that excessive, all actual damages and profit earned, plus lawyer fees of course. As for, here’s what they say when you visit their site:

Rage-Streams is NOT a free stream website for such things as but not limited to World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc., Zuffa, LLC., or TNA Entertainment, LLC.. None of the files shown here are actually hosted on this server. The links are provided solely by this site’s users. The administrator of this site ( cannot be held responsible for what its users post, or any other actions of its users. They also say “All Members/Employees Of NetResults Or People Working On Behalf Of NetResults Are Strictly Banned From This Website”, with ‘fines starting from $154.96′ for offenders. I didn’t know you could just say that! So starting today, no one from America is allowed to read my site. If you are reading this, be prepared to get fined $154.96.
