There’s been a bit of controversy surrounding this weekend’s Mir vs Crocop fight at UFC 119. Late last week, in-the-know Croatian website Index.hr reported that Mirko had suffered an eye injury and might not be able to fight. This was followed up by a “Cro cop is fine. Rumor is not true” tweet from Dana White. But at this point it seems clear that the only not true thing is the untrue tweet saying the true injury wasn’t true. Uuuh. I think. Well, this is for sure not untrue: Crocop’s eye is messed up.
CroCop sent Fighters Only an MMS (picture text message) with a photo of the eye injury taken not long after he sustained the injury. We were asked not to publish the picture but can confirm that CroCop’s eye and face were bloodied, and that the eye was clearly swollen and injured in some way.
He told us that the injury had been diagnosed initially as an abrasion to the cornea, caused when his sparring partner shoved his finger into his eye during “the last minute of the last round of the last day of sparring”. Wry as usual, CroCop remarked that “all I need now is my plane to be hit by lighting and crash into the Atlantic”.
So where does the fight sit right now? Dana White says that other doctors have cleared Crocop and they’re hoping Indiana will give the UFC a Matt Hamill Special on this one. I’m not sure whether that makes me happy or sad. I’m not Mirko’s mom or anything, but eyes are kinda useful. Seeing is fun.
