Despite the fact that Anderson Silva hasn’t exactly been looking awesome lately, no one is really giving Vitor Belfort much of a chance leading up to their fight on February 5th. Tatame surveyed a shit ton of Brazilian fighters for their predictions on the match-up, and none of them said they thought Vitor would win.
That might be because you never really know which Vitor will show up: original Vitor (good), old Vitor (bad), or new Vitor (good?). At least New Vitor is on a five win streak with 4 wins coming via impressive KO. But what happens to your expectations when the guy who’s been working on Belfort’s hands says he’s ‘lost his way’ again?
SHAWN TOMPKINS: “Well, you know, Vitor has done this before. Vitor sometimes, he gets a little clouded in his head. It’s not that he brought in Mike Tyson or anything like that. Vitor just wanders, you know, and he goes where, you know, what’s happening, what’s famous, what’s popular and he’ll go over there and Mike Tyson isn’t teaching him anything. Neither is the other eight gyms that he’s training at. Just because he’s over at Couture’s and not with me doesn’t mean he’s with Couture’s. Vitor isn’t loyal to anybody. We’ve seen it before.”
MAURO RANALLO: “I do sense some acrimony. Are you then not on good terms with Vitor right now?”
SHAWN TOMPKINS: “I hope for the best for him, but you know for a guy who told me about respect, loyalty, and God and all this stuff for so many years, he sure did prove the opposite. So, we’ll see. Best of luck to him. Best of luck to Anderson, as well.”
Now there’s two ways you could look at this: one way is to go OMG Vitor’s head is in the clouds, he’s split with his boxing coach halfway through a camp, this is doom! DOOM I SAY! And the other is to say Vitor Belfort isn’t the first guy to switch coaches and Tompkins is just acting all butthurt about the situation.
It’s not even like there’s some huge change going on: Belfort is returning to XTreme Couture, which is where he was up until Shawn Tomkins left to do his own thing last year. Shame on you, Shawn. Where is your respect and loyalty?
