With Gegard Mousasi easily dispatching Mark Hunt without getting a scratch on Monday night, everything seemed set for the long rumored Belfort vs Mousasi fight at Affliction 3 (which by the way has been confirmed for August 3rd). But now Vitor Belfort is humming and hawing about the fight:
“I didn’t saw… How was it?”, asked Belfort, who praised the quick victory by submission. “Good, huh? Showed that he’s tough on striking… Very good… Now I have to see if he’ll get down to middleweight”, said the Brazilian, who doesn’t consider going up to face Mousasi, who decided to move up after knocking Ronaldo Souza out. “Who defines this isn’t him. I fight at 185lbs. If they want to do this fight at 185lbs, it’s done, otherwise I see no option to go up, even because he isn’t a challenge, a man with much name. To go up, I don’t see him as a challenge. I want to fight with him in the weight he was champion (at Dream), then I think its worth”, decreed Vitor.
To me, the interesting angle on this fight was that Mousasi is the ‘next’ Vitor … a fighter who seems to have all the tools and talent in the world. A fight between them makes sense because it’s kinda like a passing of the torch, although with Vitor that means “Here’s the torch. Sorry the flame is out, I dropped it like 7 times. It’s a bit wet too.”
Mousasi is already trying to goad Belfort into a catch weight:
“I am very surprised that Belfort was willing to challenge Fedor at heavyweight yet it unwilling to fight me at a catchweight,” he said. Mousasi then went on to issue a compromise challenge. “If (Belfort) does not want to fight at middleweight, why not fight me at a catchweight?”
Fighters are willing to shank their own mothers to earn an opportunity to be humiliated by Fedor, but how many would do that for a fight with Mousasi? As great as he’s been thus far, he’s probably the best kept secret in MMA right now. With Vitor Belfort gearing up for one more attempt at living up to his own hype, it doesn’t surprise me that he’d want to stay at his new weightclass unless something really enticing comes along. Still, this sucks for us fans. It would have been an entertaining fight.
