Werdum gets title shot by default

On the heels of Kelly/Taylor being awarded fight of the night, I give you more confounding news from the UFC: they’ve decided to give Fabricio Werdum a title shot based on his win against Gabriel Gonzaga. You know how I know this is retarded? Because MMA Junkie had to write up a huge article explaining the UFC’s decision and why it ‘made sense’.

You and I both know that past calling ring girls retarded, Dann from MMA Junkie isn’t forthright with his opinions. He’s simply not the kind of guy to put anything in his posts unless it’s required to give context to the situation. This article HAD to be written to keep the legions of readers on his site from wondering “What the fuck is up with that???”

But Dann’s right … the reason Werdum gets a shot is because there’s really no one else around to put into contention. The UFC seems to have fucked up it’s relationship with it’s top three heavyweights: Couture, Arlovski, and Crocop. Past that the only guy in that division they have on a winning streak is Cheik Kongo, who still needs more seasoning before being able to hold a candle to the blowtorch that is the average MMA fighter’s ground game.

Of course, the UFC could fix this situation by getting off it’s high horse and offering Josh Barnett a nice pile of money to get back in the action. Or hell, how about kissing and making up with Arlovski and CroCop? It’s not bloody likely, unfortunately. Which is too bad, because if the UFC wasn’t so busy shooting itself in the foot perhaps we’d be getting to see a four way battle to the belt in the form of Arlovski, Kongo, CroCop, and Werdum.

  • mmaninja

freaking nuts, right? He looked so crappy vs Gonzaga who gave the fight up while winning and lost an even crappier fight to Arlovski. Only in UFC do you get a title shot for that kind of track record.

Dana and his personal hangs up and crappy negotiation tactics are the reason for all this crap no doubt. I mean how do you mess up a division when you have all the fighters from UFC and Pride and a tonn of money. Yep, Dana did great.

  • Michaelthebox

What the fuck are you talking about, kiss and make up with CroCop? Guy dug his own grave by getting embarrassed two fights in a row. He ain’t anywhere near a title shot unless he wins two in a row. Hell, at least Werdum’s loss in the UFC was boring enough that nobody can remember it. Easier to sell a blank slate than the fuck-up that is CroCop’s career right now.

  • mmaninja

I made no mention of CroCop, so settle down there cowboy, Kongo should be next if anything. Definitely not werdum

  • danaunclefesterwhite

The UFC Heavyweight division is really hurting these days for them to give Werdum a title shot. Yikes. Big Nog and Sylvia will have their fight for the interim belt while Couture isn’t stripped because Zuffa wants to try to work the champion’s clause in court (and it won’t work it. It didn’t in the BJ case so it won’t here. They can’t extend one’s contract indefinitely but they might not let him compete for a year after his contract expires, which means he may be iced until October 2009 (age 46).

But when Big Nog and Sylvia do their thing and with Couture not fighting, the rest of the HW landscape looks bleak. Fedor is with M-1 Global and the UFC won’t do a co-promotion. Barnett’s bridges with Zuffa were burned. Arlovski, the man who beat Werdum, is being iced and screwed over because he, god forbid, wants to test out the free agency market in April (or maybe a bit later if there happens to be a no-compete clause, which is very likely with Zuffa). Cro Cop is coming off two losses. Kongo beat Cro Cop but doesn’t have the skills on the ground to challenge for the title. Werdum lost to Arlovski but seems to be the only one left in line since he beat Gonzaga and would fair better than Kongo.

And yet the Zuffa fanboys say that Fedor should have went to the UFC to fight real competition at Heavyweight. lol. The heavyweight division is in a complete mess when Werdum is your #1 contender for the interim belt and your proper belt is iced out bad.

  • Stellar53

Just in case you didn’t see…..Andre Arlovski is fighting Jake O’Brien at UFC 82

  • Michaelthebox

What are you talking about, ninja? CroCop is all over fightlinker’s post, which is what I was responding to.

  • danaunclefesterwhite
Andre Arlovski is fighting Jake O’Brien at UFC 82
Yeah it’s convenient how they ice this guy out for 11 months and then have him face a “professional blanket” (or whatever fightlinker called him) to make him look bad in his final fight before his contract expires in April.

Btw why is it that he only had one fight left about a year away from the end of his contract term? That is quite unusual.

  • fightfan

    In Gonzaga’s own words………

He ween the fight. He is a weiner. I heard that goddamn UFC 80 trailer where Gonzaga in that horrible English says that he is going to “ween” his fight, because he is a “weiner”.

Yeah, Weirdum dont deserve it, but who else?? Dana spent all that money on PRIDE an dbought all those HW’s and now have trouble to find a contender

  • danaunclefesterwhite

The current state of the heavyweight division is proof of how Zuffa playing hardball can come back to bite them in the ass. I consider this karma. You want to fuck the fighters over all in the name of “growing the sport”. This is what you get.

The sport isn’t going to grow if Zuffa continues to fuck things up like this. They fucked up the HBO deal because Dana White is a control freak over production (and they won’t get Network TV either with that attitude) and now they fucked the heavyweight division with their way of doing business. Playing hardball doesn’t always work.

  • fightfan

Dana will continue to FUCK shit up, while the sport continues to grow. ANd these smaller promotions(Strikeforce, M-1, ELite XC) will be there to pick up the pieces(fighters, TV deals, etc) and reap the benefits of Dana White being a fucking imbecile.

I wonder if we can chalk up the fact that the UFC is breaking all kind of attendance records and merchandise sales in the UK, BUT are losing shitloads of money, that Dana also fucked this up???

  • islandguy

Clearly Arlovski is holding out for a pile of money which they do not want to give to him which is why we are not going to see much of him in the UFC any more.

Barnett publicly insulted White pretty good and we will likely not see him in the UFC anytime. He’s one of those UFC “un-persons”.

    Anyhow at least we answered the question “who is Gabriel Gonzaga” a bit;

He has a better ground game than Cro Cop…

He has a worse ground game than Werdum. Actually there was a typo in the UFC promo material. It’s not BJJ that he has a black belt in.. it’s just plain BJs.

    He gasses easily.

He’s got pretty good leg kicks. Actually he’s Cro Cops evil twin.

The future of the HW div is….. Lesner???? Actually I heard that they are going to make strikes with a card-chair to the back of the head legal. Bring on the Pro Wrestlers. Where is Andre the Giant now that we need him?

  • mmaninja

fightfan, somehow I doubt it’s all Dana’s doing re stuff in UK, I still think they should replace him with a better businessman.

When M-1 Global actually decides to start compiling their roster, Arlovski could go there. At UFC 66, Arlovski made $140,000 ($90,000 to show, $50,000 to win) and he might have earned more at UFC 70. He is a pretty expensive fighter and I think by April, the UFC will hope that they can get him to sign for a pay cut. But if M-1 Global enters the equation and actually decides to build some sort of roster for once, then he’s going to go bye bye. Fedor vs. Barnett and Fedor vs. Arlovski in 2008 would interest me very much.

  • andres

Arlovski should get a shot but he has to work on gettin some balls seemd like him and gonzzaga were scared of this werdrum dude wtf he probally hit hard maybe maybe probally not but the arlovski fight was such a given fight for him so even if it was a gay fight with the talent he’s got and now th heavywieghts are hella gay so arlovski should keep the belt for awhile

  • cyphron

Gonzaga looked like a world beater when KO Cro Cop. After that loss to Couture, everyone thought COuture was the shits. Now we realized that Gonzaga fall over and die at the first sign of trouble. How good is Couture really?

  • JiuJitsu365

How is CroCop ranked above Kongo and since when are ground skills a prerequisite for a title shot if you are winning matches?

  • fightlinker

Because Kongo is hilariously pathetic on the ground and would get schooled by anyone who put him on his back. As far as Crocop goes … he did pretty well against Nog, so that proves he’s got the chops to defend.

  • fightlinker

And re: Crocop … i prefer to take a look at his talent and skills shown over the past few years rather than just at his last two fights. The UFC needs to stop throwing guys in the trash or trying to fuck with their money if they have a few bad fights.

  • Atom

Kongo knew enough on the ground not to get submitted by Assuerio Silva, a brown belt.

  • Dangerfield

  • JiuJitsu365

CroCop lost against Kongo (as you know). Plus, Kongo, although he’s terrible on the ground, has never been submitted (to my knowledge) in the UFC.
CroCop has a storied career, but hasn’t proved that he has the mettle to be champ in the UFC,
Kongo needs a shot as promised by Dana White…

  • danaunclefesterwhite
Gonzaga looked like a world beater when KO Cro Cop. After that loss to Couture, everyone thought COuture was the shits. Now we realized that Gonzaga fall over and die at the first sign of trouble. How good is Couture really?
Umm… he did beat Tim Sylvia dude.

  • Xavier

This is the dumbest post you’ve ever written.

    “Arlovski, Kongo, CroCop, and Werdum.”

That’s some four-way. Arlovski already took down Werdum. Kongo already took down Cro Cop. Ergo, you don’t need a fucking four way, you retarded wanker. All the UFC would need to do is put Arlovski vs. Kongo.

The idea that Mirko Cro Cop is a top three heavyweight in the UFC is fucking stupidity. You cannot be a top three heavy in the UFC when your record in the UFC is fucking 1-2, with two straight losses in a row to guys like Kongo and Gonzaga. Because of the fact that deep down in your soul you’re a big fucking sloppy ‘tard for Pride, you have no ability to actually judge superior UFC talent.

Cro Cop would make a good light-heavyweight in the UFC, of that there can be no denying. But to call him a top three heavy in the UFC smacks of the same kind of retardedness that makes MMAweekly rate Shogun as still the second best light-heavy in the world, when in reality… he was utterly exposed as the rest of the Pride crew of junkies and juicers have been.

Shame on you, tard, for such a stupid blog post.

  • danaunclefesterwhite

“he was utterly exposed as the rest of the Pride crew of junkies and juicers have been.”

You DO realize that Fabricio Werdum, who just won and got a title shot, is a former PRIDE import too right? Not to mention Rampage Jackson and Anderson Silva. So what’s this whole PRIDE rant about?

  • cyphron

Pride and UFC are now one. Lets just hold hands and sing Kumbaya.

  • danaunclefesterwhite
Hey, you want to ignore everything CroCop has done over the past several years in two different sports, you go ahead and have fun with that! Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. But only assholes think their opinions are the only ones that are right! Have fun with that!
Cro Cop is talented. I don’t think he’s in line for a title shot but it’s too extreme for a lot of fickle fans to say that he’s washed up and should cut down to Light Heavyweight. Cro Cop, according to his trainers, bulked back up to his old weight of 105 kg as opposed to the lean 100 kg that he weighed at when he fought Kongo. If he gets his mental focus back, Cro Cop will be back.

  • Xavier

“Hey, you want to ignore everything CroCop has done over the past several years in two different sports, you go ahead and have fun with that! Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. But only assholes think their opinions are the only ones that are right! Have fun with that!”

Problem is, he hadn’t actually done anything. Fighting in a fixed league isn’t an actual accomplishment, btw.

Nice “opinions are like assholes” crack, you just invented time travel because I was taken back to 1997 with that one. Whoo-ah.

  • fightlinker

Ah, but then I added the tie in to say “U R DA ASSHOLE” … which is totally 2008 stylez.

  • Xavier

    Aha, well played!

Keeping things fresh in the ’08.

  • fightlinker

    Where’s the beef!

  • Eric

why is crocop listed as one of the UFC’s top 3 heavyweights? the bias in this reporting is tantamount to some things I would read on the sherdog forums

  • fightlinker

I admit that i should have written ‘three of it’s top’ instead of ‘it’s top three’. Rankings are always HUGELY subjective, so there’s no pleasing anyone no matter what you say regarding them.

  • ajadoniz

i like how linker just shits on his readers. good for you, hope you stay that way. crop cop,… crop cop. oh man. i don’t want to believe that Dana is stubborn enough to want to fuck over Zuffa (and the Fertittas) just because he’s a douche. I think there are things we don’t know. Maybe Arlovski is doing what we thought Vera was doing (which turns out it was just his manager). Maybe Mr. Josh Barnett still wants free agent status. Maybe maybe. Let us remember that Dana doesn’t have casinos as a back up for cash flow, if he fucks over the future of Zuffa he is essentially deep fucking himself in the end.

  • Matt (but I signed up as Mr. Unbelievable Pants)

A title shot against who anyway?

And why doesn’t the UFC get Mark Hunt in there? The yanks love a good slugger…
