Now that Affliction’s Trilogy event is toast, it’s time to start speculating on who decided to take the event off life support. From MMA Weekly’s mysterious double-person Steven Marrocco:
A source close to the situation also informed MMAWeekly.com that Affliction’s pay-per-view provider, Showtime, played a major factor in the cancellation.
I have no idea how PPV deals are structured so I can’t really say if Showtime had a good reason for killing the event even though it could have limped across the finish line. Honestly, Vitor Belfort probably would have sold MORE pay per views than Josh Barnett, especially after the excitement and hype of a dramatic last second switcheroo. Then again, that’s easy for me to speculate on. I don’t have a few million dollars involved.
