Will the Yahoo/UFC deal affect ‘fair’ Yahoo Sports coverage??????

Luke Thomas has taken time from teaching everyone how to make killer chicken wings to sound a warning bell over Yahoo and the UFC’s partnership. I had thought about this angle for a while and then dropped it as being unimportant. After all, can Yahoo get ‘more friendly’ with the UFC than they already are?

Dave Meltzer is gonna be Dave Meltzer no matter who’s paying him. Good or bad, what doesn’t end up on Yahoo will end up in his stupid pro wrestling newsletter. And Kevin Iole is already Dana’s buttboy to such a degree that we depicted him as Dana’s slave in our last comic. So really, how can Yahoo and the UFC teaming up make things any worse? Yahoo is for general fans who want general news. It was never going to be a place for whistleblower news regarding scandals or pay issues or anything else. So crying over the loss of Yahoo as an objective MMA news source is like crying over Burger King closing because of it’s effect on fine dining.

Sounds like someone hasn’t tried the new Spicy CHICK’N CRISP.

I was checking it out last night and the quality looked like crap.

I read that Luke Thomas article and I think somebody needs to call the waaahmbulance. Seriously, homeboy needs to find something better to do with his time than complain about shit like that. Iole is already a bitch and you’re right, Meltzer is going to be Meltzer. I’ve never read anything by Doyle but I’ve seen him in interviews and he looks and sounds like a fanboy who used to post on Sherdog in his mother’s basement so I don’t really care.

And what’s the comments in that article? People act like that whining was mind-blowing and insightful. Frankly, I think what I just blew out of my nose was more insightful than that. And all the talk about bloggers being more qualified than some journalists for ESPN or Yahoo or whatnot. No offense, FL. Well maybe some bloggers are and maybe they’re not but just because somebody knows a lot of shit about MMA does not mean they are a good journalist. I know a shitload about the sport but I couldn’t write decent articles. Ugh, now I’m whining.

    yo…and more Japanese bug fights!!!!!!!

Meh. Why would it affect their objectivity? Was anyone accusing them of being favorable towards Strikeforce when they were airing their shows for free? No. So why would it be an issue now?

  • http://www.fightlinker.com fightlinker

I’m pretty sure somebody was. I also remember someone accusing a bunch of press guys of favoritism because they got free tickets to events :-p Kimbo’s beard, people. Kimbo’s beard.

However, I guess the crux of this is that I’d be worried if Yahoo hadn’t already proven itself to be all about towing the UFC company’s line. And why not? They’re a big company that’s supposed to give the general mainstream impression of the UFC. you want scandal, go to FightOpinion. You want trash, come here :-)

Uh, Yahoo already fucking broadcast that Strikeforce event and where was Luke “I’m just a blogger and I cry over that fact” Thomas then? Where were the cries about Yahoo and Strikeforce being in bed together?

It’s an issue now because bitchy bloggers don’t like Dana and they don’t like the UFC (usually because indy companies will kiss their asses with free tickets and flights to events to curry favor, or if you’re EliteXC, hire them to be your shills like Craplan) so they whine, whine, whine all the way home.

Earlier this week Yahoo had, as the lead story on the entire Yahoo site, Meltzer’s piece on Mark Cuban’s lawsuit. No other mainstream site even mentioned the Cuban suit and Yahoo had it leading their site. Why would they do that if they were so biased in favor of UFC?

Even now they’re leading the MMA page with a column on Bob Sapp. And earlier in the week they were focusing on Kimbo.

People tend to just see the biases they want to see and aren’t going to let facts get in the way of their opinions.

    Good points there Schultz

No one in the mainstream press pays enough attention to realize that Mark Cuban is suing Zuffa. Otherwise, we would’ve seen a lot more coverage and a lot more analysis about the fairness of UFC contracts.

As for Kimbo, yes, they covered him, but not in a way I would describe as terribly fair. They have chided him since day one instead of reserving judgment, they demean his accomplishments at this early and formative stage of his career and never write pieces that really call into question the UFC’s contracts, talking points or Dana White’s behavior.

As for Strikeforce, who cares? It is the UFC and the UFC alone that the casual fan pays attention to. Whether or not the coverage of Strikeforce is biased only matters in principle, not practice. It is when the number one organization MAY be getting a pass that we really need to take a second look.

Luke’s post is Exhibit A in “I’m not going to let facts get in the way of my opinion.”

  • Xavier

Luke’s post is Exhibit A in “Any retard with ten cents and a keyboard can write an MMA blog.”

    “they demean his accomplishments”

Yeah, they should have crowned Kimbo pound for pound best in the world after he beat up Tink Rabbit. You’re a ‘tard, tardface.
