Yahoo!Sports are fucking morons

Surprise surprise, it’s time for another article talking about what total cockheads the guys at Yahoo Sports are. I know it’s getting a bit repetitive, but I’ve been told by a lot of people that I’m an ‘influencer’, and as terrifying as that concept is, I might as well use this lame ass ‘power’ to make the world a better place. With great power comes great responsibility, as Uncle Ben always said. Well, he used to say until he was killed by the Sandman. Now I just think of him whenever I microwave rice. It’s sad.

I’ve gotten over the fact that the writers at Yahoo are shills. Sure, it’s not exactly something I respect about them, but I can understand it. While licking the toe jam off Dana’s feet, you also get fed whatever crumbs of info or propaganda Daddy White feels like sharing. Yahoo wants exclusive content that will draw readers, and they definitely get it. *Everyone* knows that Kevin Iole is the mouthpiece for the UFC, so Yahoo has established itself as the place to go to hear Dana White’s opinions on whatever story is in the news.

But what I haven’t gotten over is the fact that Kevin Iole consistently reports shit for facts. He sticks to the lies told to him by the UFC even when it’s in direct contradiction of reality. And he’s not even quoting Dana White as backup for these lies … he writes them directly as if they were facts. The latest and greatest example of this was his bullshit calculation of Randy Couture’s contract, valuing it at 4 times more than it really was.

Even in his follow up article Iole fudges the numbers Couture gave, adding an extra half a million dollars to what Couture said he made on the Sylvia fight. Couture said 250k flat, 500k PPV bonus, and 500k locker room bonus. Iole said Randy got a million off the PPV. And that dumb fuck was front fucking row at the fucking conference. The rest of the MMA world managed to get it right and most of us were listening to a ProElite stream that sounded like someone talking through a 10 foot metal tube full of socks.

Don’t even get me started on Kevin’s retarded hyperbole into a fictional Plan B Couture apparently has in his head to break his contract and fight for M-1. Things have gotten to a point now where Kevin Iole has about as much legitimacy in the MMA world as a midget fight league would. So it’s not even really necessary to try and discredit what he says … most MMA fans know he’s full of shit before they even read his articles now. Fuck, almost all the people I know read his columns specifically to see what dumb wrong shit he’s going to say next.

Yahoo’s MMA reporting has all the legitimacy you’d expect from a second rate search engine trying to break into the news world. It’s pretty sad when Yahoo has to hire a PRO WRESTLING writer to try and bring legitimacy back to their coverage. But that’s exactly where we are. Dave Meltzer is another “Friend of Dana”, and while you can say he’s got a generally positive bias towards the UFC, I haven’t heard of any incidents where he’s taken a steaming shit all over his integrity like Iole seems to on a weekly basis. So I guess we’ll see what happens. But one thing is for sure … I’m not about to get tired of calling these morons out for their bullshit ‘journalism’.

So who was the source for “3.25-3.75mil per fight”??

Wouldn’t it make sense for Iole to at least print a retraction. (I know how much love he gets around here.. but seriously?)

What people haven’t been focusing on is that most of the money is paid in bonuses. So when fighters negotiate… we are in the dark about what other guys get. It is important to know what other guys are getting so we can determine our own worth.

The situation makes it so easy for fighters to get lowballed. And that is what happens constantly. It is a predatory pay scale… always has been.

I mean… say a deal is 10k/10k for 1 fight. What other industry will only pay half if you don’t win. It is more cutthroat than any other business that I can think of.

Cage fighting doesn’t need extra shit like that to add to the stress. It’s stressful enough to get locked in a cage with a big fucking meathead.

I love how Couture handed Iole the bout agreements and said they were grossly inflated right to his face. That moment alone made the press conference worth watching.

Thanks for the post. Someone needs to let Kevin Iole know to disengage his lips from Dana White’s ass.

  • http://fiveouncesofpain.com/ Matt

Linker you know whats really sad… When Junkie reposts Iole’s articles, they get dozens and dozens of noobs commenting on how insightful he is. It’s so terrible. Little lemmings don’t know how to read thru the bullshit.

  • http://www.ufcdaily.com Eric

That call out at the press conference was absolutely amazing. The only reason I want to watch it again. The problem with Iole is he is not only making a bad name for himself, but a bad name for all of MMA with his completely biased reporting. How are others supposed to respect the sport if Yahoo! sports doesn’t even care enough to provide a decent MMA reporter. You know Yahoo wouldnt take that chance with any of their other sports feeds. Even 11 year old basement bloggers seem to gain more credibility than Iole lately, and Yahoo should really think about making a staff change asap, assuming they havent already.

Meltzer, affectionately referred to as “Da Meltz” on F4Wonline.com, is probably the first person who ever actually covered MMA. Back in ’93 he was covering UFC 1 in his newsletter.

He is the O.G. MMA journalist.

  • intenso

Meltz covering MMA on WO always seemed weird to me.

keep it going. i usually send iole and dave doyle their fare share of hate mail. iole doesnt respond but that ugly fuckstick dave doyle will actually email you back talking shit like he actually knows something. generally, the yahoo sports department is full of morons. hockey is absolutely terrible there.

    hockey is terrible everywhere

My problem with Iole is not that he’s lying to the people in the know – My problem is him lying to people who aren’t in the know. The casual fan is who he reaches and deceives. Him discrediting the character of Randy Fucking Couture is what people see. They read him saying that Randy was only greedy (not getting paid what he was earning) and clearly about to sneak out the back to fight in Russia and think he’s a scumbag athlete trying to rip off the honorable UFC and the fans. This is what any average person just getting curious about MMA and seeing a headline while logging in to check their mail reads.

    That’s what pisses me off.

  • Cyrus

Wrote this email to Kevin today. Was motivated by all this bullshit. Crappy ass e-mail he’ll probably never read, but – hopefully everyone sends one!

    Kevin,

Even after reading tens of your smarmy articles, I’m utterly baffled every time at how easily and happily you peddle UFC spin so thinly disguised as journalism. You’re not just selling words, Kevin. You’re selling an agenda which schemes to keep fighter salaries low and alienate those who step out of line. That’s just for starters.

If it was just about a sell out, I’d understand. I’d sell out for a couple bucks too. But, you’re part of something that’s bad for the sport that keeps you fed. You’re disgracing your profession (do you consider yourself a journalist?) by having zero integrity. You spit out whatever’s fed to you by the UFC like a robot. You’re opinions are essentially spin. You’re *known* for this now, Kevin. Doesn’t that make you feel anything? You’re not selling yourself out, anymore. You’re selling all of us.

    Wake up, Kevin.

individual bout sheets are not the same as the overall contract. Couture’s people pulled a sleight of hand trick yesterday and no one noticed.

Speaking of Midgets (thanks for the setup, its hard to bring up Midgets in day to day conversation, but you seem to have managed.)

Hardcore Midget Wrestling – HDnet tonight at 1130pm EST — Thats right– Midgets in HD.. You know your gonna watch..

And the ProElite guys are corporate shills for EliteXC… and the Sherdog guys are all embarrassments to the art of writing… and most of the independent bloggers don’t really have brains… Zach Arnold is only worthwhile when scandals are afoot… MMAweekly are a bunch of pride fanboys… UFCjunkie is staffed by mostly retards, yadda, yadda, yadda.

MMA journalism does indeed suck. Yahoo though, is no worse than the other standard-bearer websites people visit. Not sure why all the bloggers feel so threatened by them to bitch about them constantly.

  • http://www.fightlinker.com fightlinker

Because comparing UFCJunkie to Yahoo is like comparing the Daily Show to CNN … Yahoo is supposed to be a professional organization, it’s standards should be much higher. The fact that people are being paid good money to write shit that’s worse than half the blog-crap out in MMA land is absurd.

  • Xavier

UFCJunkie contributors are paid as well, they’re paid via advertisements and their content partnership with Yahoo. The main guy also somehow has a journalist job as does Performify. Those guys are paid and they contribute bollocks. Their interviews are retard-tastic as well, look at the Shamrock “Interview.” I put “interview” in quotes because it was more of a cock-slurping.

Hell, if anything, Yahoo should be criticized for partnering up with such a shitty quasi-blog of crap.

  • http://www.fightlinker.com fightlinker

Again, the standard should be WAY higher for companies like Yahoo and CBS. It’s not enough that ya get paid … fuck, I get paid. Not to write this site, but that’s what I do *while* I’m being paid by someone else :-p

  • S. Jennum

Xavier people bitch about Yahoo because ever since they went full throttle into MMA, they’ve dictated the tone of what gets coverage through the sheer size of their operation. They write, then everyone else reacts.

  • S. Jennum

Oh and the problem with Arnold is that he also sees scandal where there is none, which blunts the impact when he actually has a valid point to make.

  • http://nosebleed.nem0.net nem0

“Yahoo is supposed to be a professional organization, it’s standards should be much higher.”

And yet they can’t even hire Iole a fucking copy editor.

  • Shawn

    That picture is fucking hilarious!

  • el feo

my GF saw Kevin Iole on Inside MMA and said he belonged in Saw or some other scary movie. Personally I think he looks like Lurch with a balding mullet.
