You don’t have to retire, but you can’t fight here

As expected, Fedor Emelianenko has been released by Strikeforce following his loss to Dan Henderson last weekend. The news was broken by grand pubah Dana White at a press conference that was supposed to be all about UFC 133 but thus far has only generated headlines and fan response related to the recent rash of controversial firings.

Here’s some totally non-smug comments from White:

“He’s being cut, yeah,” said White, following today’s UFC 133 pre-fight press conference. “Why? Do you think we should keep him?”

“You guys thought he was the pound-for-pound best in the world, but I thought he was overrated for years,” White said.

Yeah yeah yeah he’s not the #1 best in the universe ever any more. But am I the only one going FFFFFFUUUUUUUU as Overeem and Fedor get fired the week we’re stuck shelling out 40+ dollars to see an event headlined by Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans? I understand Zuffa is releasing everyone for what they consider valid business reasons, but us fans don’t care about that shit. We just wanna see big names fight big names, and three losses or not, there were still a lot of interesting fights for Fedor under the Zuffa umbrella.

Speaking of umbrellas, M-1 says Fedor wasn’t really fired because Fedor’s not actually under contract with Strikeforce:

“Fedor’s contract it with Showtime,” M-1 Global representative Evgeni Kogan told MMA Nation’s Jonathan Snowden. “He remains a Showtime fighter, on a network which has been amazing to Fedor and the team.”

“Strikeforce is not the only MMA promotion on Showtime,” Kogan said. “So there are a number of options for Fedor which will be looked at. And one of those is to work with the other MMA promotion currently on Showtime.”

Well isn’t that awesome. While we won’t get to see Fedor fight anyone from Zuffa, he’ll still be on the same television channel! Yeah! Break out the goddamn party hats! That makes EVERYTHING better!

M-1 Global and M-1 Global presents M-1 Global: Emalianenko vs Gugenishvili?

No, I don’t see it either.

If the M-1 people are smart (yeah… I know… but let’s entertain the thought for a moment), they’ll work something out with Golden Glory and have Fedor fight Overeem on Showtime (who do still have a broadcast deal with M-1). That would enable M-1 to sell more than fifty tickets for one of their shows, for once. Yay!

Then again, with Fedor’s mainstream popularity seemingly rising with every loss (the ratings for the Silva fight jumped up quite a bit from the Werdum fight even though I don’t think Silva is any more of a draw), Fedor just fighting some can might drum up some interest. Certainly more than the last M-1 card on Showtime with nobodies and boredom all around. Fedor vs. Bo Cantrell! Double Yay!

fedor is a bust. the quicker you retards realize it, the quicker you can move on with your life. the fight did a gate of $800k. that doesn’t even cover his salary. and the ratings didn’t set the world on fire. three strikes and you’re out. he’s not living up to his contract. it’s simple as that. why continue to pay him $1.5 million when he’s not bringing in enough revenue to cover his cost?

where the fuck have you been butters! do you realize the pain you put us through? how many carpenter pants jokes were lost…your virginity stories you have yet to share…post another picture on facebook i need something to do.

  • Spicoli

I understand the Fedor release. I do not like it. I don’t get the Overreem one. he needs to be in the UFC.

  • Reverend Clint

at least he was fired and didnt take the company down with him like he usually does

  • Redping

I really wanted to see Reem fight some ufc boys, I don’t care at all about fedor. Although him vs bottom of the barrel heavyweights would’ve been fun, if only he and cro cop had switched places and HE was the one with a set of balls

  • kwagnuth

If he drops those fuckin goons who manage his carreer maybe Dana would give him a second look. I’m sure Dana would love to throw him to the wolves but why bother trying to negotiate now after all the copromotion bullshit. Bottom line who needs the headache.

  • iamphoenix

dude. you guys. look. just. omg.

this is seriouser than we thought

  • iamphoenix

i don’t know who has it worse…fedor and coenon or alistair. he looks real depressed. dana white should be fired!!

    holy shit!!

Strikeforce made an investment in Fedor that worked! They frightened Zuffa enough to buy their promotion. Internet companies do the same shit all the time. I don’t think it is good for the sport and certainly not some of the fighters that the UFC has a virtual monopoly. But I bet Strikeforce’s investors are happy.

  • frickshun

Fedor is not a man. He’s an idea. If you get enough people to buy into that idea, you get rich before all the suckers find out the truth.

If Polly’s theory is right, then MAYBE it was savvy business. But paying a fighter a significant chunk of your revenue in the hopes that you get bought out is a gamble I can’t imagine anyone banking on.

  • CAP

Fedor is a lightning rod of intrigue, good or bad, someone should be able to promote that. We’ll see if M-1 rides him into the ground. If it’s god’s will of course.

I’m sure originally they planned, just like EliteXC and Afflilction, to spend too much at the beginning to build a rival promotion to the UFC. If the UFC is valued at $1 billion and you can climb to 20% of its market share, then presto you’re worth $200 million. You can waste many millions on overpriced fighters if that’s your end game. Of course, it didn’t work, because the UFC crushes its competition. So they went to plan B: selling out.

Who knows what Zuffa paid for Strikeforce. Maybe it was chump change and they took the money because the promotion was going down the drain anyway. But comparing Fedor’s purse to the gate discounts what I’m sure at least someone saw as a potentially profitable business model, because someone had to put that money up upfront.

I’m not impress ahossle Fedor uppercut him twice and caused Dan hendo to drop like a piece of crap LOL wait all Hendo did is knee on Fedor’s tigh nothing much and u said he was being destroyed how childish a bitch addressed himself as so-called MMA fighter who trained with GSP along with Tae Kwon Do LOL 2009, Herb Dean did the same mistakes like Fedor vs Dan Hendo you kiddo now go finger your mom’s pussy hhaha
