Zombie Pride sued by Sucker Pride

The guys from DSE did a pretty good job of fucking over Zuffa with the PRIDE sale. If I was to compare that business deal to a high school scuffle, I’d say DSE pantsed Zuffa, gave them a wedgie, and hung them from a coathook in a toilet stall. In other words, total ownage to the extreme.

But now it looks like Zuffa has run home and tattled:

–Pride FC Worldwide Holdings (basically the dummy company set up by UFC after the Pride purchase) have filed a lawsuit against Dream Stage Entertainment, Dream Stage Holdings and Nobuyuki Sakakibara claiming they were defrauded millions of dollars in the purchase of the Pride and Pride Bushido brands.

According to Zach Arnold (who is starting to get a creepy Nostradamus vibe going again), Zuffa got stiffed in pretty much every possible way:

  • Fighter contracts: Non-transferrable
  • Pride employees: Uncooperative and scheming
  • Pride brand: useless in Japan due to yakuza scandal
  • Video Library: Haha, turns out that was owned by Fuji TV
  • Killed the competition: If by killed the competition they mean bought up the competition’s debt and now the competition is running shows again in everything but name, then sure. But I don’t think that fits the textbook definition of ‘killed’. Closer to ‘helped’.

I’m sure Zuffa got a bunch of office supplies, a few desks + chairs, and some cool merchandise out of it. But after you pay somewhere in the realm of high millions, I imagine you expect a bit more. But hey … this is business, people. I’m interested in knowing how the fuck Zuffa’s going to explain the fact that they didn’t realize they were getting fucked. Are they going to claim they didn’t understand all that squiggly squok writing the Japanese put on the contract? Did Dana White call their Japanese lawyer “Long Dong Duck” or something?

I’m clueless to how international business works, but I do get the feeling that it’s going to be kinda hard getting any money out of a shady Japanese company like DSE. So what’s the point behind this lawsuit? Is Zuffa just continuing the trend of litigation to prove no one fucks with them without heading to court? Is this all just a big play to appease the Nevada Gaming Commission? I’m sure shit will settle somehow like all fun lawsuits do before court (unlike shitty lawsuits like Zuffa vs Couture which will end in 2022). But if it doesn’t it’ll be interesting to see what comes out of this.

Haven’t the Zuffa people seen the film “Rising sun”? Don’t they know the Japanese don’t play fair with the gaijin?

  • GonzoDamon

    From that same article:
“…defendants were required to cooperate with and submit to background checks and drug tests to ensure compliance with the regulatory requirements of plaintiff’s gaming license.”

HUH????? Drug tests? Surely they don’t mean the fighters? If so, this could get interesting!! It couldn’t be the fighters, though, because they weren’t “defendants” in this deal. Are they suggesting that Sakikibara, Takada, and company should have been drug tested? How is that relevant?

Man, this makes the UFC look very desperate. To me, this appears to be a last ditch effort to not HAVE TO sell the UFC!!

  • fightlinker

Things are starting to point to that as a possibility. But i’m not adverse to new ownership. It could really be what the UFC needs to take shit to the next level.

  • MJC_123

You will all be in tears when Vince McMahon takes over….all of you sobbing into your keyboards.

  • GonzoDamon

It would be Shane McMahon that bought it, Vince’s son. Shane is a HUGE MMA fan. TO be honest, it COULD BE very good for MMA. UFC would get on USA and with the McMahon’s entertainment and business connections, it COULD TAKE MMA to the next level. I think the Zuffa has realized that they just couldn’t and won’t be able to take it there.

Shane taking over with him or his father buying the UFC might be very good. I guess we’ll see…

  • Gavin

Yeah… and then the brand will have zero credibility. Maybe he has good intentions, but the McMahon name is mud when it comes to real competition. Remember the XFL?

  • fightlinker

    Jesus christ. Scary thought

  • GonzoDamon

Hmmm…I hadn’t thought about that. Many speculated that the main reason that the XFL failed was because people assumed that it was fake, just like wrestling. I suppose the same could apply to the UFC….

BUT….the UFC is already established, whereas the XFL was just starting. Any org with X in it’s name, or something trying to push itself as more extreme than something else, is naturally lame.

  • MJC_123

Imagine the drug testing if the McMahons took over, it would be how do we put it…..internally edudicated.

Christ its times like this I’d do anything for Pride to be back as it was…..Cro-Cop winning, that music, the announcer, decent competition for the UFC, waking up early sunday morning in the UK to watch it live…..

I mean is someone really rationalising the WWE buying the UFC as a good thing!

Report: Sakakibara preparing lawsuit against Fertittas
February 06, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: Pride, UFC

There are more details leaking out in regard to Pride FC Worldwide Holdings (a.k.a. Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, the majority owners of the UFC) filing a lawsuit in Clark County (Nevada) court last Friday against Dream Stage Entertainment, Dream Stage Holdings and DSE president Nobuyuki Sakakibara.

The Fertittas’ suit makes claims of being defrauded millions of dollars from the sale of Pride FC and Pride Bushido. So, what does that mean, you ask? Well, is one site that has delved into some specifics:

Dream Stage was supposed to go through a background check and drug testing to ensure compliance with the regulatory requirements of the Fertittas’ gaming license in Nevada.

Operate words: GAMING LICENSE. I really don’t know how I can stress that enough. GAMING LICENSE.

It also looks like the situation could escalate further in short order, according to

A source close to DSE told on Tuesday that Sakakibara was preparing his own suit against the Fertittas for breach of contract stemming from the decision to shut Pride down last October.

Perhaps the UFC vs. PRIDE feud isn’t over after all?

You know, it seems like both sides in the deal are unhappy. Why not an even exchange? Zuffa gets their money back and DSE gets PRIDE back?

Or maybe they could do the whole bizzarro dream concept on bad TV shows where someone is shown waking up and everything that took place in the past three episodes suddenly never really happened?

  • fightlinker

This is turning into quite the shit storm. Casino License Trouble + potential xyience fraud + rising costs / lowering returns puts a new spin on the ‘For Sale’ rumors

  • MJC_123

Never been a more appropriate time for that PRIDE ENTERANCE MUSIC….the Drums “DUM DUM…… DUM DUM” are calling the death knell on the UFC, being screamed by that banshee women leaving us with nothing but YAMMA pit fighting to watch till the end of our days.
