Not only did Josh Barnett turn down a UFC contract but also a matchup with Junior dos Santos – and it’s apparently all over a fit of Eddie Alvarez penis envy.
“I was excited to fight Junior. I thought he was a favorable match up for me, but Zuffa was unwilling to give me something that they gave Eddie Alvarez. No disrespect to Eddie, but I felt it was fair to give it to me as well. Although things seem to be working out well for me, I feel bad for the fans. They wanted me to fight certain guys in the UFC and I really wanted to give them those fights. Once we get the deal we are working on done, the fight the fans scream for will be lost forever.”
The UFC offered Josh a fight with Junior dos Santos which would be a co-main event at worst and they apparently reached their “sticking point” over including pay-per-view revenue in his contract.
Josh claims to be working on a deal somewhere else right now and unless something drastic happens, it looks like this is going to be another one of the UFC’s near-misses with top heavyweights.
PPV cuts in contracts have been more an issue lately because of the ongoing Eddie Alvarez legal battle. When Benson Henderson had already defended his title twice, he only got his hands on PPV revenue after the UFC offered Eddie Alvarez a much more lucrative contract than he had at the time.
The difference with Josh Barnett is that he’s not coming from a promotion that stands to make a counter-offer. He might think he’s worth more than the UFC are offering but he just doesn’t have Benson Henderson-type leverage.
I really love Josh but comparing his stock to Eddie Alvarez’s is a little bit of a lopsided argument and it really sucks that this might be what keeps Josh out of the UFC for good. Eddie Alvarez stands to make so much money in the UFC is because his contract negotiations were driven completely by spite – something that pays in spades with Dana White involved.
